I am also the President of the 'I can't stand DW' fan club.

I don't know if anyone noticed or not, at the end of the Daytona 500, when the drivers were going into turn three, and it was getting clear that the winner was not coming from the Gibbs camp, our ol buddy DW got extra excited. Why is that? Does he not like Tony Stewart? Kurt Busch? Maybe he's just a big fan of Newman, or Penske.

I can understand an announcer getting excited when his brother or son is coming to the checkered, and I have been touched especially by Ned Jarretts call to the checkered for his son. I was even smiling when DW announced his brother Mikey to his first Daytona 500 victory.

I for one will admit I have really never been a fan of DW. It really stems from his early days, when he wouldn't/couldn't keep his mouth shut. Then came DW's win at Daytona. What did we get in victory lane? A poor imitation of the 'Icky Shuffle', made popular from Cincinnati's running back. You see, 'ol DW, (I don't use his name, because his initials stand for Dim-Wit) can't come up with anything original. From his Crystal Gayle refrences,......... "He done 'Blue Bayou'." , to his inane chatter about how "this cat has a fast hot-rod" and how he wants his spotter to tell him where the leaders at......."the leaders at the line ........now."  If you want to know where the leader is, just look in your rear-view mirror DW, because in the last third of your driving career, thats where they could be found. You went from being a brash, hot shot that could back it up, to a spineless wimp who took up space on the track. Your best during that time was your commercials with your sponsor Western Auto, and look where that lead. No more Western Auto.

Now you land a spot as a commentator with the new boys on the block when it comes to broadcasting NASCAR. You swipe some goofy catch phrase from somebody, because we know by now, that you can't come up with anything on your own, and it sticks with people who don't know any better. You are a trickster, DW. You almost had me reeled back in before the 50th running of the Great American Race. Choking back the tears, remembering how great it once was. You almost had me. Then the ol DW that I know and despise shows himself. Last Lap. Turn three. Cheering against my driver. You didn't cheer for Newman. You didn't cheer for Penske. You cheered against Tony Stewart. Don't like his hair? Don't like him because he is what you once were?  I really can't say that because Tony Stewart is a race car driver. I'm not sure if you really had the balls to do it.

So, once again, we have to suffer through your 'newest' catch phrase, although you have no idea where it came from, but you once heard someone say it, so you steal it, and use it on TV, "Hello Newman". Maybe thats why you didn't want to see Tony win. You haven't stolen anything to say about Tony.

I'm sure that this may ruffle a few feathers of the DW fans out there, but I don't care. If you don't want to see this type of thing said about your guy, then let him know that people are on to him. I myself am not going to stand for it. DW must be stopped!! Doesn't NASCAR and FOX know that little children are watching?

So, for the good of NASCAR nation, for the good of future mankind, please, please, join me in the 'I can't stand DW' fan club. Together, we can fight to get guys like this removed from the broadcast booth, and the general public.

Okay, I can understand why you can't stand him....here's a question...

How do you feel about Jeff Gordon??? :)

(Okay, I know it's getting old and that's my last reference, I promise).

DW gets a little carried away sometimes. I guess I had a different view than you had at the end of the race. I took it that he was pulling for a Toyota to win with his comments "It`s a Toyota drag race down the backstretch." I may be wrong but I just did not see where he was pulling against Tony.

Oh, the blonde curls were awsome. It's that 'waif' look that had people talking. Most guys like something to hang on to anyway.

It may be your fault that I am discouraged with someone related to NASCAR.  Nah......it stems from way back.

You know...I was going to say something...but I'm soooooo going to behave.

And no, you can't blame your discouragement on me...at least this time.

Plaid, like you I use to not be able to tolerate DW when he was a driver but that changed in 1987 when NASCAR threatened to take his license for bumping Earnhardt but did nothing to Dale the week before when he slammed DW into the fence.  That is when I became a fan of his.  As for the calling of the race yes DW got real excited when Tony dropped down to pick up Bush, I think DW thought we were going to have one of those Bumper to Bumper finishes but Kurt couldn't get to Tony and Bush smacked the crap out of Newman to give him the shove to push them both 2 car lengths ahead of Tony.  I think if you were to stop and listen to DW you will find he is one major fan of Tony.  Why, because Tony reminds him of him in his younger days.  Tony, like DW doesn't care whose toes he steps on when he opens his mouth, he is going to say what is on his mind and that is what DW did.

Like him or not, say what you want about Earnhardt and his popularity in this sport, if DW hadn't come along this sport wouldn't be where it is today.  This man was the very first driver that was either loved or hated by the fans, no in between.  When Dale came along he stood up to DW and all those haters jumped on the band wagon.  If DW hadn't been there for the fans to hate then Dale would have been just another driver in the mold of David Pearson, Richard Petty and the Alabama Gang.  Also, remember when you go to a track and purchase those Tony T-Shirts, hats and other items it was DW that started that.  DW wanted to see how many fans he had in the stands so he set up a trailer to sell T-Shirts.  Then Teresa Earnhardt came along and saw the fortunes that could be had and used her marketing skills to turn it into a multibillion dollar business, by plastering Dales image on everything and also help boost his popularity.  Dale also wasn't the most popular driver on the circuit when he came on board because of his bumping and banging.

Mikeryfan........thanks for the comments. I have always contended that you can't have a good guy with out having a bad guy. I was just disappointed when Tony wasn't able to win it. I'm sure when he was doing the commentary, I was yelling at the TV, and when I realized that the Penske guys were going to take it, thats probably when he started talking about Ryan.

Besides, it amazes me what pops into my head during the middle of the night.

Plaid, I just don't know what to think of these fanatical fans that seem to talk about nothing but their drivers and miss what someone else was saying at the same time don't you?

Where do I sign up? If I wsn't already a NASCAR fan I would stop watching because of DW. The guy takes away from good commentary. When the green flag drops and DW does that rediculous "Boogity, Boogity" BS I hit the mute button on the remote. He reminds me of John Madden, the bumbling football idiot. Fox and Speed should do us all a favor and let DW retire. I am not sure if DW was really wanting Smoke to not win or if he just got so excited to see someone unexpected take the win. Either way I hope he had on his DEPENDS, because I'm sure he wet his pants.
